Abstract:Objective To screen out the items for the specific module of a patient-reported outcome(PRO)measure for pneumoconiosis, and to provide the basis for evaluating the living status of patients with pneumoconiosis and improving their treatment outcome. Methods A candidate item pool for the specific module of the pneumoconiosis PRO measure was proposed by means of literature retrieval.A core group of clinicians, nurses, and experts in epidemiology,psycholo-gy,and quality of life research as well as our team members was established.A primary screening was performed on the item pool by means of expert consultation.Based on the interviews and surveys with 25 patients with pneumoconiosis and 20 medical staff at Guangdong Province Hospital for Occupational Disease Prevention and Treatment,a secondary screen-ing was performed on the items yielded from the initial screening by using the importance score by patients, importance score by medical staff, coefficient of variation method, correlation coefficient method,Cronbach's coefficient method, and factor analysis. Finally, the core team modified the selected items based on the clinical significance, interview results, and expert opinions about the items,to identify the specific module items of the pneumoconiosis PRO measure. Results The primary screening yielded 25 pneumoconiosis-specific module items, which covered clinical symptoms, psychological effects, physiological effects, treatment compliance, adverse drug reactions, and health behaviors. The secondary screen-ing yielded 16 out of the 25 items. After discussion within the core group,24 items were finally identified for the specif-ic module of the pneumoconiosis PRO measure. Conclusion This study yielded 24 items for the specific module of the pneumoconiosis PRO measure covering the clinical symptoms, psychological effects, physiological effects, treatment com-pliance,adverse drug reactions, and health behaviors of patients with pneumoconiosis
