Observation of serum level of cystatin C in type 2 diabetic patients with carotid atherosclerosis

Abstract：Objective To observe the serum level of cystatin C in type 2 diabetic patients with carotid atherosclerosis. Methods We collected 282 cases of inpatients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.According to the carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), they were divided into the normal group (group A, CIMT <1.0 mm) and carotid atherosclerosis group, and further more the carotid atherosclerosis group was divided into group B (CIMT≥1.0 mm) and group C (CIMT≥1.5 mm).We com-pared the serum levels of cystatin C in the three groups.Results There were 90, 93 and 99 cases in the group A, B and C, and the levels of cystatin C were (0.88 ±0.18), (1.02 ±0.16) and (1.21 ±0.34) μmol/L.There was significant difference in these three groups (P<0.01).Binary logistic stepwise regression analysis showed the serum cystatin C level (OR=39.543, 95%CI:1.608-972.513, P=0.024) was related with CIMT.Conclusion The serum level of cystatin C increases in the type 2 diabetic patients with carotid atherosclerosis and cystatin C is a risk factor for carotid atherosclerosis.
