Abstract:Objective To investigate the relationships between depression, pulmonary function and quality of life in patients with stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease ( COPD) .Methods The depression subscale scores in Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale ( HAD-D) were used to determine the level of depression that a patient is experiencing.Ac-cording to HAD-D, 80 stable COPD patients were divided into the non-depression group ( HAD-D<8 scores) and the de-pression group (HAD-D≥8 scores). The differences in the pulmonary function, six-minute walk distance (6MWD), the modified Medical Research Council dyspnoea scale (mMRC) and COPD Assessment Test (CAT) between the two groups were observed. Results There were 9 cases in the depression group and 71 cases in the non-depression group who were experiencing depression. No significant differences in the pulmonary function, 6MWD and mMRC scores were found be-tween the two groups. In the depression group, total CAT scores, CAT subscores of activity and mentality were separately 21.11 ±5.46, 7.44 ±1.51 and 4.78 ±2.39, which were significantly higher than the non-depression group with the scores of 13.87 ±6.33, 4.07 ±2.87 and 2.90 ±2.36, respectively.HAD-D scores were positively correlated with the to-tal CAT scores (r=0.495, P=0.000) in stable COPD patients. Conclusion Depression is not related with pulmonary function, but is related with the quality of life in patients with stable COPD.
