Abstract:Objective To investigate the expression changes of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2), phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 ( p-ERK1/2 ) and matrix metalloproteinase 9 ( MMP-9 ) in naso-pharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and their correlations, and to discussed the significance. Methods The expression of ERK1/2, p-ERK1/2 and MMP-9 proteins was detected in 75 cases of NPC tissues ( NPC group) and 27 cases of chronic nasopharyngeal inflammation tissues (CNI group) by immunohistochemical SP method , and the relationships among them in NPC tissues were analyzed .Results The positive expression rates of ERK 1/2, p-ER-K1/2 and MMP-9 proteins of the NPC group were significantly higher than those of CNI group (all P<0.01, χ2 =19.8, 17.1 and 21.3, respectively). The expression of p-ERK1/2 and MMP-9 was positively correlated with ERK1/2 (r=0.58,0.34 respectively, both P<0.01), p-ERK1/2 and MMP-9 expression was positively correlated with each other (r=0.34, P<0.01).Conclusion ERK1/2, p-ERK and MMP-9 proteins are highly expressed in human NPC and is positively correlated with each other .The p-ERK1/2 may participate in the invasion and metastasis of NPC by regulating the expression of MMP-9.
