Study on Causes of Dormancy and Methods for Breaking Dormancy of Cephalotaxus sinensis (Rehd. & Wils.)Li Seeds

Abstract：The causes of seed dormancy of Cephalotaxus sinensis (Rehd.&Wils.)Li were investigated through detecting seed viability,water permeability of seed coat and bioactivity of extracts from different parts of seeds.And the cold stratification was used to break dormancy.The results showed that the seed viability was 90% with greater germination potential.There were germination inhibitors in seed coat and endosperm (including embryo),and the inhibiton of endosperm (including embryo)was stronger than that of seed coat. The mechanical restraint and the existence of germination inhibitors were the causes for seed dormancy.Cold stratification was an effective way to break seed dormancy of Cephalotaxus sinensis.
