Abstract:Sixteen cultivars of blackberry have been introduced to Fengqiu of Henan Province by Institute of Botany,Jiangsu Province and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. After three -year culture test in open field,it was found that blackberry planting was difficult in this area mainly because of low survival rate of plants, serious frost damage and chill injury. The average survival rate of the sixteen cultivars was only 44. 97%,and different cultivars had different degrees of frost damage in winter and chill injury in early spring. Under the better conditions of water and fertilizer, the average annual increment of branches and tendrils of the 16 cultivars was 5.50 dm3 ,which was less than half of that in suitable area Nanjing. The yellowing phenome-non of leaves was serious and the average production was only 1 ~2 kg per plant. Therefore,Fengqiu was not suitable for planting blackberry because of the main restriction factors of alkaline soil and winter cold.
