Cold Tolerance Study of Introduced Hibiscus mutabilis Varieties in Jinan

Abstract：Hibiscus mutabilis has big and beautiful colored flowers with good ornamental value.It also has some economic and ecological application values,such as medicinal and edible values,making the air clean, preventing soil erosion and so on.As long as the root of Hibiscus mutabilis can overwinter in north,the new branches will grow and then flowers will bloom in the coming year.To clarify the overwintering safety of 8 Hibis-cus mutabilis cultivars in Jinan,5 temperature gradients,5,0,-5,-10 and -15℃,were set to detect their rel-ative electrical conductivity,soluble sugar content,proline content and POD activity and LT50 .The results showed that Mudanhong,Dahong and Hangzhou Mudanfen had lower relative conductivity change and LT50 , higher soluble sugar and proline contents and POD activity under low temperature treatment.The LT50 of the 3 cultivars were -1 3.68,-12.21 and -11 .34℃.The 3 cultivars had stronger cold resistance and could safely overwinter in Jinan.
