Abstract:This article summarizes Professor ZHAO Zhongyin's clinical experience in treating meibomian gland dysfunction(MGD)-associated dry eye syndrome based on the theory of coexistence of dryness and dampness, applying unblocking the five channels method. It holds that the imbalance between dryness and dampness is the key pathogenic mechanisms of MGD-associated dry eye syndrome. It particularly emphasizes the crucial role of phlegm-dampness in the onset of MGD-associated dry eye syndrome and the significant impact of improper work and rest on the recurrence of the disease. The basic treatment principle proposed is"unblocking the five channels and providing an outlet for phlegm-dampness",advocating the use of Chenpi(Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium),Muxiang(Aucklandiae Radix),Shengjiang(Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens),etc.to regulate the channels of water and food digestion;the use of Dahuang(Rhei Radix Et Rhizoma),Mangxiao(Natrii Sulfas),and Huomaren(Cannabis Fructus)to regulate the intestinal excretion channel;the use of Zexie(Alismatis Rhizoma),Cheqianzi(Plantaginis Semen),and Zhuling(Polyporus),etc.to regulate the urinary excretion channel;and the use of Yuxingcao(Houttuyniae Herba),Jingjie(Schizonepetae Herba),Guizhi(Cinnamomi Ramulus),and Xixin(Asari Radix Et Rhizoma),etc.to regulate the respiratory channel of the nose and lungs and the sweat pores. At the same time, during clinical treatment,it is necessary to pay attention to regulating work and rest, and not to neglect nourishing yin to prevent excessive dryness from harming the body. One test case is attached.
