JIANG Deyou's Experience in Treating Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Based on Theory of"Spleen Failing to Disperse Essence"

Abstract：By tracing back the theory of"spleen failing to disperse essence",we elucidate the occurrence and development of type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM),and summarize Prof.JIANG Deyou's experience in treating T2DM from the theory of"spleen failing to disperse essence".Prof.JIANG holds that the root for T2DM is congested earth,depressed wood,and cold water,while the branch is dampness,phlegm,stasis,and toxin.The general principle of treating T2DM is syndrome differentiation and treatment based on mechanism identification,treating both root and branch,and adjusting the yin and yang.The treatment focuses on assisting the spleen to transport essence,also involving treating other organs.Based on holistic view of the five zang-organs,he treats T2DM by soothing liver and warming kidney,resolving phlegm and eliminating stasis,and regulating and tonifying qi,blood,yin,and yang.The clinical evidence reflects the academic characteristics of Prof.JIANG,that is,focusing on the combination of body and use,using resolving instead of clearing,consolidating yang-qi and yin-fluid,and using specialized medicinals for specialized diseases.
