Abstract:Objective: To observe the clinical effect of laser acupuncture and moxibustion on primary insomnia (PI). Methods: Seventy patients meeting with the inclusion criteria were randomly divided into observation group(n=35) and control group(n=35). The control group was given estazolam tablets while the observation group was treated with laser acupuncture and moxibustion besides estazolam tablets. The two groups were treated continuously for two weeks. The changes in sleep quality and the severity of insomnia were observed and compared. One month after finishing the treatment, follow-up and clinical evaluationof the curative effect were carried out. Results: The total effective rate in the observation group was 91.4%, which was higher than the 74.3% in the control group. The clinical cure rate in the observation group was 25.7%, which was also higher than the 5.7% in the control group. Both differences were statistically significant (P< 0.05). The Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) and ascension insomnia scale (AIS) scores decreased after treatment and during the follow-up, with statistically significant difference between the two groups(P<0.05). At the same time after treatment, the PSQI score and AIS score in the observation group were significantly lower than those in the control group, with statistically significant difference between the two groups(P<0.05). Conclusion:Laser acupuncture and moxibustion can improve the sleep quality of PI patients and reduce the severity of insomnia. The long-term follow-up result is better than that of pure western medicine.
