Abstract:Professor CHI Huaji based on the study of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) classics proposed that the pathogenesis of epilepsy is deficiency in root and excess in branch. The deficiency means the weak of spleen and kidney and the poor function of both spirit. Excess in branch means uprising of phlegm qi obstructing the clear orifices. The key factor of pathogenesis is spleen deficiency and phlegm turbidity. Therefore, the basic treatment principle is supplementing qi and resolving phlegm, opening orifices and tran-quilizing mind. Based on this principle,a primary formula for epilepsy is established. Moreover, according to the different phases, different treatment is given. In the acute stage, patients were treated with resolving phlegm, opening orifices, tranquilizing mind and calming to treat the branch, while in the chronic stage,pa-tients should be treated with invigorating spleen, resolving phlegm, tonifying kidney and liver. Also there are some cases treated with satisfactory effect.
