DING Yuanqing's Understanding of Therapeutic Principle and Method for Edema

Abstract：Professor DING Yuanqing puts forward different understanding of the therapeutic principle for edema compared with Internal Medicine of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Through the profound understanding of the basic concepts of "therapeutic principle" and "therapeutic method",sweating,dieresis,and purging to eliminate water belong to the category of the therapeutic method ,which are not the therapeutic principle for edema. Combined with the understanding of edema in the Yellow Emperor's Internal Cannon,Professor DING Yuanqing holds that the pathogenesis of edema can be divided into pathogenic factors leading to edema and deficiency of healthy qi leading to edema. Therefore ,deficiency and excess should be differentiated before the treatment. The therapeutic principle of edema can be summed up as eliminating pathogenic factors ,toni-fying deficiency,dispersing and unblocking yang qi,restoring the qi transformation in the viscera and regulat-ing the water passage. In order to raise and invigorate the metabolism of fluid,and get rid of edema,the dispersion of yang qi should be emphasized.
