Abstract:Objective:To observe the effect of acupuncture on carotid atherosclerotic plaque and the occur-rence of cerebrovascular end-point events, and its impact on anti-inflammatory cytokine level. Methods:Six-ty-six patients with carotid atherosclerotic plaque were randomly divided into acupuncture group and control group,33 cases in each groups. Changes of carotid atherosclerotic plaque and plasma IL-10 level, and the occurrence of cerebrovascular end-point events were observed. Results:After 6 months of treatment, the plas-ma IL-10 level was significantly higher in the acupuncture group than the control group (P<0.05). The carotid atherosclerotic plaques of the acupuncture group progressed slower ,with a higher rate of converting to stable plaques compared to the control group(P<0.05). The incidence of cerebrovascular end-point events were significantly lower in the acupuncture group than the control group (P<0.05). Conclusions:Acupuncture could slow the progression of carotid atherosclerosis ,and improve the prognosis of carotid atherosclerosis ,and increase the plasma IL-10 level, and decrease the occurrence of cerebrovascular events.
