Abstract:Respiratory viruses are among the major pathogens responsible for respiratory tract infections, which can lead to pulmonary tissue damage, inflammatory responses, and even life-threatening conditions. In both clinical treatment and basic research, licorice has demonstrated promising antiviral activity against respiratory viruses.Given the complexity of its bioactive components and the diversity of its mechanisms of action, elucidating the active constituents and underlying mecha-nisms of licorice is of great significance for optimizing clinical applications, rational development of licorice-based prepara-tions,and the discovery of novel antiviral lead compounds. In recent years, significant progress has been made in identifying the active constituents and mechanisms by which licorice combats respiratory viruses. However, further in-depth and system-atic investigations are still needed. This review provides a comprehensive summary of current research on the active constitu-ents and antiviral mechanisms of licorice against respiratory viruses, outlines the research methodologies employed, and dis-cusses future research directions. The aim is to offer new insights for the further exploration of licorice's antiviral constituents and mechanisms, and to provide a theoretical basis for the advanced utilization of licorice resources and their clinical appli-cation.
