Abstract:Multiple sclerosis is an immune-mediated inflammatory disease of the central nervous system, and microglia,as important immune cells in the CNS,play an essential role in CNS development, immune surveillance and home-ostatic maintenance. Also in multiple sclerosis, microglia regulate a wide range of immune responses and are key mediators of neuroinflammation, and their inflammatory activity can damage myelin and promote disease progression, but phagocytosis and tissue remodeling capacity also promote endogenous repair of myelin. This article reviewed the dual role of microglia in multi-ple sclerosis and its mechanisms, and further discussed the potential of microglia as biomarkers and therapeutic targets in multiple sclerosis.
