Research progress on saponin surfactants used in drug delivery systems

Abstract：Saponins are effective ingredients of many traditional Chinese medicines,which can be used as natural surfactants due to their amphiphilic structure,high surface activity and self-assembly property.More and more studies have found that when drugs are combined with saponins,the solubility or bioavailability of them can be improved,or a certain synergistic effect can be produced.Therefore,saponins have attracted much attention as potential drug delivery system(DDS)carriers.In this paper,the molecular characteristics,mechanism of action and application of saponins as carriers in DDS were reviewed.
