Analysis of the Causes of Surface Defects on 40Cr Forks

Abstract：The 40Cr fork steel produced by a certain company shows pockmarked surface or red spots on the surface after heat treatment,the causes of surface defects were analyzed by chemical composition analysis,mechanical properties,metallographic examination,scanning electron microscope and energy spectrum analysis in this paper.The results show that,The chemical composition and mechanical properties meet the requirements,the samples with pockmarked surface and red spots have a certain degree of decarburization,the protrusions in the pockmarked surface are mainly caused by uneven deformation due to adherent mill scale,there has been a certain degree of oxidation in the red spots,especially the enrichment of copper particles in the red spots,so In order to eliminate surface defects and reduce oxidation formation,appropriate heat treatment processes are essential.
