Abstract:Polarization imaging can effectively compensate for the shortcomings of ordinary optical imaging due to its own advanta-ges, especially the Mueller matrix image that contains all the polarization information of target. In this paper, a set of Mueller matrix imaging system was established based on the principle of double rotating retarders to explore the ability of polarization imaging to distin-guish cancerous and non-cancerous tissues, which utilized tissue backscattered light to measure Mueller matrix of pathological slices. The Mueller matrices of liver cancer, lung cancer and gastric cancer were measured respectively. These three kinds of cancers were high incidence in the world.Experimental results showed that the polarization information expressed by each Mueller matrix element was not the same. And in some Mueller matrix elements, the polarization characteristic of cancerous and non-cancerous regions was significantly different, which could be used to help identify cancer and normal tissue.Mueller matrix polarization imaging will be a po-tential pathological detection method in biomedical research.
