Abstract:To explore the brain activity changes of smoking addicts after a two-week long cessation of smoking.Resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data of 14 recruited smoking addicts was acquired using a 3.0T MR scanner right before and after a two-week long cessation of smoking.Amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (ALFF) was extracted and used as a measure of brain functional activities. After a two-week long smoking cessation, ALFF was found significantly decreased in right hemisphere precuneus, right posterior cingulate gyrus, left supramarginal gyrus, left dorsolateral superior frontal gyrus and left middle frontal gyrus, while in calcarine fissure and surrounding cortex, cuneus, left postcentral gyrus and left paracentral lobule ALFF was found significantly increased. The findings in ALFF indicate that a two-week cessation of smoking can result in brain activity changes in frontal, limbic, parietal and occipital lobes of smoking addicts, which makes ALFF a potential evaluating indicator for smoking withdraw effects.
