Abstract:To improve the viability and quality of life of patients who had their anus removed because of rectal cancer or those who have severe fecal incontinence,we designed a mechanical device that imitates the functions of natural anus. The artificial anus was com-posed of artificial anal pads, connecting loop, and miniaturized liquid pump, which was implanted in the pelvis as a substitute for the anus. This design was implemented successfully. The artificial anal pads had two parts:the support frame made from titanium alloy and the sacs made from silica gel for medical use.The liquid pump was miniaturized so that it was small enough to be implanted into the body and was operated by a wireless remote controller in vitro. The mechanism of IAA is tested and proves to meet the standard of the design and can be implanted into the body.By controlling the miniaturized liquid pump, the artificial anal pads are opened and closed freely so that the patients can control over their defecation and overcome the incontinence. The IAA works well as the natural anus.
