Abstract:To understand the adaptability of garden trees to low-light environments and expand species selection for shaded habitats under elevated bridges, this study used two-years-old potted seedlings of Cercis chinensis,Ligustrum lucidum.and Euonymus japonicus as test materials.Compared to an outdoor control environment, three light regimes were simulated:greenhouse shading, normal light within a greenhouse, and complete shading with supplemental lighting from growth lamps.Photosynthetically active radiation(PAR)at the plant canopy level, along with plant growth and photosynthetic parameters, were measured. Results showed that as canopy PAR decreased, the maximum net photosynthetic rate, light saturation point, light compensation point and specific leaf weight of three species significantly declined, indicating their photosynthetic acclimation to low light.Based on their light compensation points under shading,C.chinensis exhibited the strongest shade tolerance,E.japonicus demonstrated moderate shade tolerance, while L.lucidum displayed the weakest shade tolerance.Under severe shading conditions, supplemental lighting can only achieve significant improvement if the canopy light intensity exceeds the species-specific light compensation point.
