Abstract:This study examined the effects of biochar amendment on the growth, functional traits, and soil stoichiometry of Michelia macclurei in Yangzhong Town,Youxi County,Fujian Province.Based on a randomized block design, biochar addition and no biochar addition treatments were set to measure and compare the differences in growth volume, leaves and fine root functional traits, and soil stoichiometry of M.macclurei.Furthermore,the correlations between root and leaf functional traits and growth were examined to investigate the effect of biochar addition on soil stoichiometric characteristics. The results revealed that biochar addition remarkably increased the diameter at breast height and fine root biomass of M.macclurei by 1.36 and 1.32 times, respectively. It also improved first-order root functional traits, specific leaf area, and specific leaf perimeter demonstrating coordinated changes in above-and below-ground traits.Besides, biochar increased the soil C/N,C/P,and N/P ratios, slowed down the rate of soil mineralization, and promoted nutrient accumulation. Moreover, the limiting element of soil was nitrogen.
