Abstract:The golden snub-nosed monkey is a species with a one-male-multi-female layered social structure, exhibiting complex and diverse social behaviours.A hand-reared infant monkey can acquire essential social behaviours via reintroduction into a population of conspecies. However, studies on reintegrating a hand-rared golden snub-nosed monkey under captive conditions are still lacking. Our study focused on reintroducing a hand-reared golden snub-nosed monkey into a social group.Using instantaneous and scan sampling, the frequency and changes of social behaviours, such as carrying, grooming, holding, sitting closely, aggression, and play, exhibited by different individuals in the group towards the reintroduced infant, were observed. The data revealed that the group members successfully established social relationships with the introduced infant(IF).The biological mother of IF(AF1)exhibited the highest frequency of carrying, sitting closely, and holding, followed by a subadult female monkey.SF primarily play with IF,whereas no distinct interactions between adult males(AM)and IF were observed. These findings highlight the necessity of establishing a group structure similar to wild golden snub-nosed monkeys to facilitate the reintegration of hand-reared individuals. This study provides valuable insights and theoretical guidance for the reintegration of hand-reared primates.
