Research Progress in Morphological Classification of Ulmus Species

Abstract：Ulmaceae(Ulmus),commonly known as elm,are deciduous trees,about 40 species in the world.There are more than 20 Ulmus species in China,which are distributed all over the country.Ulmus is popular because of its excellent material,good resistance to drought,cold,salinity and wind,and is widely used in medical treatment,food,industry and so on.This paper reviews the morphological identification studies on bark,wood,leaf,flower,pollen,fruit and seed of Ulmus,and puts forward the existing problems and prospects in the future.It provides the basis for understanding the phylogeny of Ulmus,searching for the potential provenance and establishing a more perfect natural classification system of Ulmus.
