Survey and analysis of the violent injuries of the nurses in the psychiatric department

Abstract:Objective:To investigate the situations of the violent injuries of the nurses on duty in the psychiatric department in order to find the corresponding countermeasures .Methods:The characteristics and causes of the violent injury events were retrospectively analyzed in 210 nurses of the psychiatric department .Results:In this group,the injured nurses whose working years were less than 5 years accounted for 42.4%,more than 15 years accounted for 35.2%;the violence dominated by psychiatric symptoms accounted for 57.6%;Cuffing and kicking was most common ,accounting for 41.5%;most events happened on the day shift ,accounting for 63.3%;the events usually hap-pened at the time when the nurse were in nursing procedures ,accounting for 57.6%.Conclusion:The influencing factors of the violent inju-ries of the nurses in the psychiatric department include work experience of the nurses ,work time,work state and psychotic symptoms of the patients.The prevention strategies involve improvement of nurse occupation quality ,risk assessment,skills training and psychological sup-port for the injured nurses .
