Abstract:Based on the panel data of 30 provinces(autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government)in China from 2014 to 2023,this paper empirically examines the impact of the construction of a unified national market on the urban-rural income gap and its mechanism of action. The findings show that the construction of a unified national market can significantly narrow the urban-rural income gap,and this effect is more prominent in the central and western regions and more significant in regions with a lower degree of marketization.Specifically, the unified national market indirectly narrows the urban-rural income gap by promoting the development of rural financial institutions and advancing the coordinated development of urban and rural industries. In addition, the impact of the construction of a unified national market on the urban-rural income gap has a spatial spillover effect, and market linkage between regions will further strengthen the convergence effect of the income gap.Based on the above conclusions, this paper puts forward policy recommendations such as deepening the reform of market-oriented allocation of factors and promoting the coordinated development of industries. These recommendations aim to advance the construction of a unified national market, narrow the urban-rural income gap,and contribute to the realization of the goal of common prosperity.
