Abstract:In the recent Sino-US trade frictions,China was compelled to impose retaliatory tariffs, primarily targeting agricultural products.Building on a theoretical analysis of the restrictive, diversionary, and net effects of these tariffs on China's agricultural imports, this study employs a difference-in-differences(DID)model to empirically assess their impact on both import quantities and prices. The results indicate that:(1)The retaliatory tariffs significantly suppressed the quantity of agricultural imports from the United States and forced down the prices of U.S.agricultural products, demonstrating the effectiveness of the tariff measures;(2)The tariffs also generated a significant import diversion effect, leading China to increase agricultural imports from other countries and regions;(3)Overall,the tariff retaliation significantly increased the total volume of China's agricultural imports but did not raise the average import price. Therefore,in terms of agricultural trade itself, the retaliatory tariffs did not have a substantially negative impact on China's overall agricultural imports.
