Development Process of the Practice and Ideas of Angkor Monuments Conservation

Abstract:The Angkor monuments in Cambodia are a glorious historical site in human history and the common cultural heritage of mankind. They are also a reflection of best conservation practice in international historical sites:the conservation ideology and practical methods always keep pace with the latest international conservation ideas and methods. Initially, as a French protectorate, the Angkor monuments were restored by the French according to Western heritage conservation ideas; latterly, different countries and international organizations utilized new ideas and technologies from around the world to protect the Angkor monuments, reflecting countries' different conservation methods and ideas in different cultural contexts. The jade may be refined from stones coming from other hills. In this thesis, Western and Oriental conservation philosophy of cultural relics are presented through an analysis of the development of practices and ideas on conserving the Angkor monuments throughout history, with a view to providing a reference for domestic heritage protection.
