Abstract:Under the mutual influences of cross-cultural integration and geographical environment, the existing modern Catholic churches in Suzhou have inherited the architectural characteristics of western classicism and absorbed the local construction culture, resulting in unique architectural features that integrate Chinese and Western architectural styles. Suzhou Yangjiaqiao Catholic Church, built in 1892, is located out of the ancient city of Suzhou City. It is one representative building characterizing this Chinese-Western architectural integration. This paper begins with an exploration of the architectural features of the church through qualitative investigation of its historical data, then undertakes on-site mapping from six aspects: plan, elevation, profile section, details, landscape and culture, in order to explore the cross-cultural architectural language and the transformation process of Yangjiaqiao church.
