The Enlightenments of Modern Western Block Design Theory on Planning of Chinese Open Blocks

Abstract:Block is the basic element to form the physical space and social environment of a city. From the Industrial Revolution, Western countries have large amounts of researches and practices on the space morphology, transportation, function and social value of urban blocks during their urban developments. In this paper, theories on western block planning from the late 19th centuries are divided into four periods. Current characteristics and problems of block planning in Chinese cities are further analysed. It concludes with four block planning principles: developing compact block forms,building vital and safe streets, continuing historical neighborhood context and creating ecological block environment.
