Mechanism and Strategies on Integration of Spatial Programming and Urban Design from Perspective of Inventory Renewal

Abstract：Large cities in China have witnessed the transition from incremental development toward inventory promotion. Based on theoretical research on urban revitalization in terms of phasing characteristics, stakeholders,and driven forces, this article starts from a retrospection on traditional urban design approaches. It then conducted a systematic research framework on mechanism integrating spatial programming and urban design together,in which, the role of urban design transforms from blueprint to problem solving; the stakeholder of urban design change from dominant municipality to multiple interest bodies; and the approach of urban design should consider place making as well as urban marketing. The paper also provides three types of cases, involving CBD design guidelines, municipal engineering inventory renewal, and historical district regeneration to illustrate the integrated mechanism.
