Abstract:The long term climate change and unpredictable emergent events deeply impact on the structure and spatial pattern of social-ecological system in China. As a response to the challenges caused by climate change and other disasters, the concept of resilience was proposed and developed. Because the research of resilience is often related to the issues of time, scale and geographical aspects, and has the high capacities of application and expansion, it can bring a positive influence on the changes of interior social-ecological system. However, the significance of the idea is reduced by low understanding of the background and this concept, and by unclearly the research scope as well. This article manages to review the significant research by introducing the relationship and definitions of resilience, ecological resilience, engineer resilience and urban resilience across different discourses; and introducing the current resilience framework and indicators, both of which might provide a high value example and reference for future urban resilience development in China.
