Study of Regular Educational Space Composition in Schools for Mentally Impaired Children

Abstract:Special education is a necessary part of the nine-year compulsory education in China, and schools for mentally impaired children consist of the largest proportion of special education facilities. Currently, ordinary educational space design in these schools basically follows the codes of regular primary and secondary schools,not paying enough attention to the special needs of mentally impaired students. Based on field investigations of current situation of these schools, this article analyzes the needs of functional spaces for their educational development. Based on this analysis, this article also suggests the programming, spatial capacity and composition modes of their educational spaces. This article concludes that the design of schools for mentally impaired children should keep with its time, and the designs should be neither conservative nor without considering practicality.
