The Starting Point of Vernacular Architecture Research in China ?

Abstract：In 1930s, the modern scholars of South China have started the initial research of Chinese vernacular architectures. In the political and cultural environment of national-culture-consciousness and national-culture-introspection, Long Qingzhong and Guo Yuanxi, as the representatives of these scholars, carried out their research with respectively tendency on historical preservation and historical criticism. And it should be the first time that the Chinese vernacular architecture boarded the stage of history as a research object. Different value judgements led to different research which focuses on the research contents, thinking methods and target results. The differences and complementarities of research practices provided a diverse and useful demonstration for follow-up study.
