Study on History and Art Characteristics of Guanzhong Donghu Garden

Abstract：By analyzing systematical y the historical documents, the study discussed the evolution history of Guanzhong Donghu Garden, which started from the time when the famous poet Su Shi dredged and expanded the Old Phoenix Pool in the Garden in 1062, after that local officers and scholars had made a lot of renovation and reconstruction on the Garden. The art essence of the Garden was deliberated including the landscape with the inner-outer twin lakes and the moderate open-close plan, the landscape architecture with pavilions and bridges, and the plant landscaping characteristics composed of wil ows with lotuses and bamboos and plums adored by gentlemen. The surrounding environment of the Garden is wide open and the inner space is elegant and exquisite, which showed the art characteristics of Northwest garden with being unrefined in most matters but delicate in some place. The art characteristics with a profound cultural accumulation defined Donghu Garden as a representative of classic gardens in Guanzhong area.
