Deconstruction and Conservation of Defensible Space at Fortress Settlements:The case of Lengquan Village

Abstract:The defensible space of Fortress settlements work at a specific period which substantiate the adaptation to regional social environment and natural environment. Nowadays, new village space composes no defense form under the change of modern social environment and fortress settlements have declined extremely with serious destruction of defensible space system. It is essential to study the defensible space of fortress settlements and make efforts on conservation. By a thorough case study on Lengquan village, which locates at Lingshi County, Jingzhong City of Shanxi Province, the paper deconstructed the hierarchy system of the defensible space in Lengquan vil age based on a vast site investigation and mapping work, and specified a conservation area with solid protection measures. At last part, the paper encouraged the social awareness of the conservation on fortress settlements, and provided a good reference for reconstructing the fortress settlements.
