How to Balance Technology and Art?A Study of Applying Green Design in Building Technology Courses
Wu Wei
Abstract:AbSTRAcT Architectural education has traditionally emphasized the artistic aspects of design, while building technology and quantitative analysis has generaly been given short shrift. But in recent years, these latter areas of expertise have become increasingly vital to sustainable architectural praxis. The author attempts here to chalenge traditional architectural education, using as a case study the application of green architectural design in building technology courses in the Department of Architecture, Nanjing University. This paper introduces an experimental form of building technology education, emphasizing green architectural design and—especially—computer energy simulation. The author found that most architectural students went too far in the case study, focusing almost exclusively on energy simulation and analysis mainly, and largely ignoring issues of design and artistic creativity. The authors here analyze possible reasons for this result, hoping to engage both educators and practitioners in a lively discourse on teaching technology in order to better educate the next generation of architects in China.
