The Transformation and Development of Urban Planning Theories in China:From the Viewpoint of Western Urban Planning Theories

Abstract:AbSTRAcT Western urban planning theories had undergone dramatic changes ever since 1960s, among which, systems theory, rational process theories, Marxis and critical theory, new right planning, Pragmatism, Planners as Advocator theory, Post-modern planning, and colaborative planning are the most typical ones. During the 30 years after Opening-Up, urban planning theories in China are mainly developed to address to economic growth, regional competitiveness and demands upgrading. With the change of conditions for urban development, urban planning theories in transitional China should be analyzed and further developed from the perspectives of transitional development demands, social governance, urban divide solutions and the planning system transformation.
