From "Site" to "Place":Design Studio I (The Landscape Architecture Foundation) in Graduate Course

Abstract:Landscape Planning and Design is becoming one of the required courses in Master Program of Landscape Architecture. In fall semester 2015, this studio course has been provided by the Department of Landscape Architecture, at School of Architecture, in South China University of Technology. This article introduces the teaching objectives, philosophy, contents and methods. First, this course aims at emphasizing students' skils of basic landscape architecture design and cultural expression. Second, the teaching topic is set as 'from site to place', guiding students to study the internal and external relationships of the site. Through studying relevant cases, students are encouraged to make meaningful humanistic places. Last, the teaching methods include lectures, field trips, desk critiques, pin-ups, PowerPoint presentations, mid-term review, final review, and so on.
