Research on the Gardens in the Southern Song Dynasty

Abstract:As the capital Lin’an was the center of Northern Zhejiang Province in Southern Song dynasty, it was celebrated for varied kinds of private gardens in this region. These gardens with wonderful landscapes of buildings, rockeries, pools and plants achieved a high level, and formed a complete system with distinctive local characteristics. Especially around the city of Hangzhou, Some invaluable examples are in existence to this day. Based on large amount of detailed investigations and surveys of al of the extant gardens and relics, the goal of this research is to study the history and the design ideas of the private gardens around the Northern Zhejiang Province in Southern Song dynasty, to sum up their developing process and landscape characteristics, and to explore their cultural connotations. The achievements of this project can be used in the modern landscape design and fil in a gap in the field of the ancient garden study.
