Abstract:aBstract The water system in the Yangtze River Delta has been gradualy degraded and their special form has been widely changed, therefore their underlying ecosystem services are also decreased. Based on clarifying the mainstream theories on urban sustainability, this paper proposes that the significance and urgency of the study on correlating eco-services with spatial form. According to the theory of Human Settlements, this paper argues that the provision of effective eco-services is the core of physical form based on clarifying the relationship between the ecosystems within the context of human settlements and the spatial form in built environment. This paper briefly discusses the theoretical foundation, research objectives and expected research outcomes of the research, which is recently supported by National Natural Science Foundation (Youth Foundation).
