The Sacred Space of Modern Churches in Lingnan:A Case Study of Shishi Sacred Heart Cathedral & Christian Dongshan Hall

Abstract:This essay begins with the case study of modern Lingnan Churches, such as Guangzhou Shishi Sacred Heart Cathedral and Christian Dongshan Hall. It summarizes the method of constructing sacred space, which resulted in different mental experience, and different religious spiritual representations. Architectures of churches also changed in the process of localization from single ecclesiastical purpose to multi-secular functionality. Especially with the development of Protestant Churches, missionary schools, hospitals and various welfare organizations were established to benefit people in the area. The understanding of the concept of the sacred space in churches wil help the discuss the conceptual and the extensive meaning of them as wel as the more profound on this basis. Then comes an analysis of the extensive of this from its angel of secular buildings.
