The Hakka Settlements Beside Upper Reach of Hanjiang River:The Research of Traditional Villages in Meizhou

Abstract:Meizhou locates beside upper reach of Hanjiang River. Benefiting by Hanjiang, the economy developed very fast in the past. The levels of development of these traditional villages were depending on their relationships with the water transport on Hanjiang river. These villages can be divided into three types. The first type, vil ages beside docks and main shipping routes, engaged in traditional agriculture as wel as business. The second type, vil ages on plains which are within a certain distance to the main shipping routes, with dense streams, owns terrific land for agriculture. The last type, villages in the mountains which have barren land, earned their lives by heavy manual labor and sel ing local products. The first two types of vil ages were much richer than the last one. Different geographical positions influenced the economic development level, and the different economic development levels decided the consumption levels and the cultural characteristics, by that means, the village morphology, the architecture style and the construction quality appeared slight distinction. The research considers upper reach of Hanjiang River and its branches as clue, and studies the material remains of the traditional vil ages.
