The architectures and the city itself have evolved in two ways: the splendid development of ancient architectures and the old town had been continued, and Western decoration began to appear in houses in Nantong, which could be called the beginning of the architecture modernization. ln 1895, Zhang Jian, the businessman with strong political power, achieved a monopoly commercial development rights in Nantong. After that, the city had formed a system of one city and three towns, and the integration of western style and Chinese traditional architecture became popular.
