Application of "Front and Back Stages " Theory on Conservation of Traditional Villages and Towns in China

Abstract:The "front and back stage" theory comes from the "dramaturgical perspective" by Erving Goffman, which made a great influence on Sociology and Tourism after development of Dean MacCannel. The theory was introduced to China by pro.Yang Zhenzhi in 2006, and then has beed widely used on conservation and tourism development of traditional villages and towns in China. This paper reorganized the development history of the theory, and explored some methods to realize the theory based on the international literature. Reconsidering the disadvantages of the theory and the future research focuses, the paper explored the design strategies on historical and cultural vilages protection and tourism development based on this theory.
