Mortise and Tenon Joint System of the Memorial Hall in Yisi Tang Ancestral Hall in Shawan Town, Canton

Abstract:aBsTRacT Yisi Tang is an ancestral hal in Shawan town of Panyu which was built in 1557 by the Wang family. Zhan Ruoshui cal ed the ancestral hal beautiful and immortal in his article, compared it to the morality. Part of the roof truss in this existing structure of the memorial hal has col apsed, which was built in the Early Qing Dynasty, some components of the wooden structure were removed for safety, so we can survey and draw the form, size and the connection of the mortise and tenon of this structure. The memorial hal has 3-bays in side lengths and 16-purlins in depth, which has 4-pil ars in section. It was supported by the stone pil ars, wooden pil ars, rowlock cavity wal s and wooden beams, in which the wood is acidic and hard. There are short pil ars, dougong, tuodun and shuishu in the wooden structure, which have delicate decorations and various mortise and tenon joints. According to the survey and record, the purlins in each other, the purlins and the short pil ars, the wooden pil ars and beams, the stone pil ars and the wooden beams are investigated and their forms and tectonics are studied in this paper.
