Urban Cultural Spaces in Taiwan and the Sustainable Planning Strategies
Hsu Yu-chien
Abstract:aBsTRacT During the process of fast and strong movement of “urban historical preservation”, public protests and distorted “deculturation”phenomena have been triggered. Suggestions contradicting to governmental policies or even doubts have been raised by the private and academic cultural preservation groups. Owners of historical heritage even lost their confidence in government decisions. The gap has been identified between the discourse of national preservation and the nature objective of “reality” and “locality”of local life culture. After leading and participating the processes of historical preservation of three old streets in Taipei metropolitan area, the author, as an architect of historical preservation, adopts “reflective critique” to present discourse values and distorted development phenomena with case studies. It is also an attempt to suggest possible solutions for professionals who try to overcome the external myths in practices.
