Exploring a Path to Modern Architecture in China -Analysis on the Design and Education Thoughts of Huang Yulin

Abstract:Modern architecture of the west influenced China through various paths between 1920s and 1950s. Among domestic architectural schools, Beaux-Arts system has been considered as mainstream. However, its teaching method and design ideas evolved during that period. The intention of this paper is to present case studies as a means of analyzing changes occurred in that era. The author wishes to focus on the works of Huang Yulin(1926-1954), an architect and teacher who was trained in Beaux-Arts style at Hangchou Christian Col ege;Whose short career was active in the early 1950s. Basic principles of Beaux-Arts were noticeable in Huang's works, and the influence of modern architecture was evident. The discussion on modern architecture resulting effects on Beaux-Arts system itself is also included.
