The Preservation and Reuse of Traditional Houses in Taiwan

Abstract:Taiwan is an immigrant society. Immigrants from Fujian and Guangdong sailed across the Taiwan Strait and built numerous houses in Taiwan. However, many traditional houses faced the dilemma of demolition and preservation. This paper wil review various dimensions of preservation of traditional houses in Taiwan fol owing the enactment of the Cultural Property Preservation Law in 1982 and discuss their potential reuse.
