History and the Form of Cities
Abstract:Underlying cultural variability and individual character, there are trans-historical structural patterns in cities which make a city a city in the first place. We find much more continuity in the forms of the city under social transformations than we might expect. It follows that it is important to study and understand these continuities as well as the changes. We can make good cities for the future by understanding those of the past. As a theory and a method, space syntax suggests a new approach to using the past to create the future of cities. The cases of Suzhou and Beijing are examined in the paper. The analyses show us how space syntax could be applied in design and planning of a historical city.
